Well, it depends. Some days I photograph a journalistic style, somedays I shoot professional sports or commercial photography, and others a creative and lifestyle approach. When comes to weddings, that can also change. I try to be be flexible and adaptive to my wedding couples needs. Some people love a very creative look and colors while others love a classic look that resemble the film days. My wedding style is a blend. If I had to put a defined wedding style to how I generally photograph a wedding it would probably be:
5% classic or traditional
20% fine art -creative
75% journalistic and or candid
It can change with the style and personality of the couples I photograph. This is why refer my style of wedding photography in my own terms and like to use Lifestyle Wedding Photography. My style adapts to you but still remains my style in that it is my creativity the makes the picture and style. My photography style is rooted in my own creativity in that I am not trying to emulate anyone else work. There is no cookie-cutter process. As with creativity that is always in a constant state of change, my style also changes with the personalities and circumstances.
Part of my style is shaped by my camera gear. I know many photographers/friends would differ on this point but the truth is my gear allows me to photograph certain styles. My camera equipment yields different looks with different light. Different lenses give me different perspectives and without getting to technical, different gear creates different looks. There are things a $6000 lens can do that others cannot. This does influence the look and style of my pictures. For me, photography gear is a direct extension of my style.
Part of my wedding style is using 3-4 cameras interchangeably and pretty much at the same time. My style is to capture different perspectives of the same scene that are often non-repeatable. How I carry and create with my gear has been a result of years of trial and error. I use a significant amount of photography equipment during weddings. I average on full day wedding coverage the use of 4 cameras and 7-10 different lenses. This is individual to me. Choosing the lens, the camera, the settings, type of lighting and how I use that lighting is all part of my individual style.
I think to really understand my style is to look at the evidence. That is, look at my pictures and the different styles on my website. The number one thing that affects my style is CREATIVITY. Creativity is hard it explain. It ebbs and flows. It is alway sin a state of change, state action. Creativity by definition cannot sit still or do the same over and over. It motivates and challenges me. It is something intrinsic that drives me to work hard and create something special for my clients. At the very core… it is creativity that is my style.
My philosophy is keep it simple. I put a lot of info only site about styles and process but the reality is my wedding photography process is not complex by any means. I have had the privilege to photograph other photographers weddings and have many brides who are spring photographers hire me for as their wedding photographer. I am often humbled by the fact that other people see my work and call it inspiring.
I decided to put a different take on my wedding photography site and talk in depth about some philosophy and style as I find many people are interested in and read every word. I have all included a lot of pictures on my website which is contrary to the average site as I wanted to show the diversity in styles that I create. In the end I have a lot of people who hire me and say just do what you do as we trust you.
In short, I keep things simple and simple or can talk your ear of about ideas and styles.
